The Business Administration undergraduate program at UC Berkeley is a well-thought out program; while not very flexible, provides background for every area of business and prepares students for such areas successfully. In my opinion, this is one of the reasons why the program is so valuable. The core curriculum provides a way to discover the best path suitable for you in business, and the electives provide more focus within that particular path. Haas has one of the strongest undergraduate business programs in the country, and it is due to its amazing faculty, rigorous curriculum, and wide-reaching alumni network. I would like to highlight the curriculum specifically.
- Principles of Business – introductory look at accounting, ethics, marketing, and human resource management.
- Introduction to Economics – introductory macroeconomics and microeconomics, at Berkeley this is combined into one class in the form of Econ 1.
- Calculus – two semesters of calculus.
- Reading & Composition – two semesters of “English”; at Berkeley this is represented by an “R” in its course name.

- Business Communication (UGBA 100) – a two-unit class that focuses on professional speaking and writing.
- Intermediate Microeconomics (UGBA 101A, Econ 100A, Econ 101A, EEP 100, or IAS 106)* – different classes have different emphases. UGBA 101A focuses on business, Econ 100A on microeconomic theory, Econ 101A is more quantitative and is theory that requires multivariable calculus and linear algebra, EEP 100 focuses on environmental economics and policy, and IAS 106 focuses on humanities in general.
- Intermediate Macroeconomics (UGBA 101B, Econ 100B, Econ 101B, IAS 107)* – different classes have different emphases. UGBA 101B and Econ 100B are the same if taught by Wood, which focuses on macroeconomic theory. Econ 101B is more quantitative and is theory that requires multivariable calculus and linear algebra, while IAS 107 focuses on humanities in general.
- Financial Accounting (UGBA 102A)
- Managerial Accounting (UGBA 102B)
- Finance (UGBA 103)
- Analytic Decision Modeling Using Spreadsheets (UGBA 104)
- Leading People (UGBA 105) – used to be called Introduction to Organizational Behavior, the name change was as a result of a wish of being more consistent with Haas’ MBA program.
- Marketing (UGBA 106)
- Social, Political, and Ethical Environment of Business (UGBA 107)
The course titles above are self explanatory. The curriculum covers everything you can possibly think of. An interesting fact you may notice is that Haas is known for consulting, and yet the titles give no mention of consulting. This is because Haas integrates consulting success in all of its classes implicitly, requiring case briefings and presentations in nearly every class. *Note: only UGBA 101A and 101B will count towards the core, if you choose the other options, you will have to make up the difference through electives.
Haas requires nine units of electives, in which a list is shown in these Haas electives. The numbers correspond to the core classes in the curriculum. For instance, economics-related courses are represented by 11# (in which intermediate economics is represented in UGBA by 101A and 101B), accounting by 12# (in which introductory financial and managerial accounting is shown by 102A and 102B), finance by 13# (in which introduction to finance is 103), etc. For classes whose numbers are further than ethics, 18# contains many real estate related classes, and 19# contain a variety of other smaller classes that don’t fit in with the other numbers, most of which consists of entrepreneurship, leadership, and symposiums.
